Nataraja is the dancing form of Lord Shiva. He represents God as the simultaneous creator and destroyer of existence. Within a circle of fire and with his dreadlocks flying, Shiva dances creation. In one hand he holds the drum representing OM, the sound of creation. In the opposite hand Nataraja holds Agni, the fire of destruction. Shiva dances on top of a dwarf who represents illusion and anything in the way of true seeing. One hand makes the Abhya mudra, the sign of protection and freedom from fear while the opposite hand gestures towards the ground and makes the shape of his elephant headed son Ganesha’s trunk.
